Do you Work from 8 to 16 Hours a day? Do you get headaches, back pain, neck  Pain, tired Eyes?

These days, people mostly do the majority of their work in front of the computer. The digital age that we now live in as made it so that computers have become ubiquitous and an essential part of everyday life from mundane tasks such as making a list of groceries to more serious work oriented tasks. The primary input device used in computers is the keyboard; this is where you will spend most of your time working. Continued Keyboard usage can become detrimental to your health and lead to repetitive Strain Injury, otherwise known as RSI for short.

  • Do you work Non-Stop?

  • Do you Forget To Move Around?

  • Do you Forget To Eat Food?

  • Do you Put off Going Pee?

  • Are you Getting Pot Belly?

You are at RISK of RSI

Repetitive Strain Injury is an umbrella term for a number of work-related injuries that affect the eyes, hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders and neck. RSI can also affect tendons and nerves. Prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury is relatively easy and should be employed as much as possible to subvert the dangerous effects it will have on an individual’s health.

An Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) can damage tendons, muscles and nerves of the neck, shoulder, forearm, hands, legs and back and in other parts of the body. RSI can cause pain, weakness, numbness and difficulty in grasping objects.

Example: Pain during mouse/keyboard use. Headaches are very common problem among computer users. Eye Protector Pro is a software platform that helps you with the prevention/recovery of Repetitive Strain Injury.

Pain in arms, wrists and hands

  • Swelling, inflammation
  • Numbness or tingling sensation
  • Decreased movement of a joint
  • Stiffness of body part
  • Symptoms worsen with time

Eye Strain & CVS

  • Double vision
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Short sightedness
  • Eyes very sensitive to light
  • Eye fatigue, red eyes, eye strain, pain in & around the eyes.

Tension Headaches

  • Feel excessive pressure on sides of head
  • Tension Headaches
  • Nerves – which carry visual information from the eyes to the brain getting tired causing headaches are very common problem among computer users.

Figures from charity BackCare show that 50 per cent of office workers who use a computer say they have lower back pain, while another survey found that 36 per cent of deskbound workers complain of poor posture.

Computer eye strain affects more than 70 % of the approximately 143 million Americans who work on a computer on a daily basis, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA). Doctors say that generally anyone who spends more than two hours a day in front of the computer screen is most likely to experience this problem. Computer vision syndrome is a term which is used to describe all the symptoms of vision related problems. This not only affects the eyes but also affects the sufferer mentally and physically. This in turn also affects one’s productivity at work.

Prolonged Sitting & Increased Risk of Bowel Cancer

Recent studies suggest adults now spend around 55 per cent of their time at work sitting down — and prolonged sitting is thought to increase blood sugar levels and damage insulin production, which have both been linked to the development of bowel cancer.

More than 37,500 people a year in Britain are diagnosed with bowel cancer, which has a high mortality rate — about 16,000 a year — as many victims ignore early warning signs.

Prolonged Sitting & Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

thrombosis (DVT) — the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs — were office workers who spent endless hours at a computer.

Although DVT has been dubbed ‘economy class syndrome’ because it is common among people who have been on long-haul flights in cramped conditions, Professor Richard Beasley, who led the study, found that deskbound office workers were more likely to be affected.

Prolonged Sitting & Pot Belly

Office workers who don’t get up and walk around every hour can gain two to three pounds a year in weight – Professor Mike Cawthorne, director of metabolic research

Sammy Margo, a spokesperson for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, says that slouching at the desk puts strain on some muscles and weakens others.

The result? Round shoulders and a pot belly. ‘You don’t use your abdominal muscles when you slouch, so you will eventually lose strength and tone in that area,’ Margo says.

‘Having rounded shoulders and bad posture will also cause your stomach to stick out. Standing up straight can have an instant stomach-flattening effect.’

Prolonged Sitting & Bigger Bottom & Piles

Wondered why your bottom is getting broader by the week? Time spent at your desk is certainly not helping to tone your posterior.

‘With your knees at a 90-degree angle when you sit, your hamstring muscles and hip flexors are permanently shortened and your buttock muscles stretched but not engaged, so that they are not working or being strengthened,’ Margo says. Just standing up and sitting down a few times an hour will give your buttocks a mini workout and help to avoid the dreaded spread. But walking up the stairs at work is the best bottom-toner of all. One in two people in the UK  suffers from the embarrassing problem of piles (haemorrhoids) at some time in their life, and sitting down on a chair too long can make them worse. Piles — swollen blood vessels in the back passage — are caused by increased pressure in the blood vessels in your bottom, and being seated for hours on end increases the pressure being placed on the buttocks.

Bad Posture & Turkey Neck

Constantly looking down at books or a computer screen can also cause unwanted neck creases and saggy jowls, warns leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Prager.

‘If you spend most of the time looking down, then neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually causing a second neck,’ he says. ‘We are seeing a lot of people with executive jobs in offices who have this problem.’

Keeping your screen at eye level and using a book-stand to prevent bowing your head for hours on end while reading reports can help prevent neck wrinkles from developing.

Dry Eyes & Dehydration

Less than four per cent of employees drink seven glasses of fluid a day, according to a recent survey of 1,000 UK office workers. As a result, many suffer headaches, a lack of concentration and dizziness. With air conditioning and central heating added to the mix, skin can become dry and parched, adding to the appearance of wrinkles.

Even your eyes can become dehydrated. ‘Make sure you blink fully and regularly as your eyes will dry out staring at a screen,’ says Karen Sparrow, education advisor at the Association of Optometrists.

Without taking pauses and breaks your eyes blink rate decrease.

The most important action one can take to prevent Repetitive Strain Injury is to take occasional breaks when using the computer.
