How a desk job damages your body:

After scientists reveal office workers are more prone to bowel cancer, the full impact of sitting down all day

British workers spend more time sitting behind a desk than doing anything else. As a result, we’re suffering from backache and poor posture. And this week, research revealed that people who work in sedentary jobs for ten or more years are doubling their risk of bowel cancer. Here, we reveal the other effects your office job is having on your body…

Office workers who don’t get up and walk around every hour can gain two to three pounds a year in weight Professor Mike Cawthorne, director of metabolic research at the University of Buckingham, says centrally heated offices could prevent the activation of brown fat, which is used by the body to burn extra energy to generate heat and maintain the body’s core temperature. ‘We need to activate brown fat, and there are simple ways to do it,’ he says. ‘Don’t have the heating on in the car or at work, and spend more time outdoors, especially in winter.’Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1379050/Office-workers-prone-bowel-cancer.html#ixzz1lG4nhoZ3

Recent studies suggest adults now spend around 55 per cent of their time at work sitting down — and prolonged sitting is thought to increase blood sugar levels and damage insulin production, which have both been linked to the development of bowel cancer.

More than 37,500 people a year in Britain are diagnosed with bowel cancer, which has a high mortality rate — about 16,000 a year — as many victims ignore early warning signs.

‘Being physically inactive can mean a greater cancer risk,’ says Dr Claire Knight of Cancer Research UK.

Researchers in New Zealand found one-third of patients admitted to hospital with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs — were office workers who spent endless hours at a computer.

Although DVT has been dubbed ‘economy class syndrome’ because it is common among people who have been on long-haul flights in cramped conditions, Professor Richard Beasley, who led the study, found that deskbound office workers were more likely to be affected.

How many times have you snacked at your desk without cleaning your keyboard? Two years ago, scientists working on behalf of the consumer group Which? found that some keyboards had 150 times the acceptable limit of bacteria and five times the amount found on a toilet seat.

Of the 33 keyboards swabbed for food poisoning bugs E.coli, coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus and enterobacteria, four of the keyboards were considered a potential health hazard, and one was ‘condemned’.

Two had ‘warning levels’ of Staphylococcus aureus, and two others had ‘worryingly elevated’ levels of coliforms and enterobacteria, ‘putting users at high risk of becoming ill from contact’.

Constantly looking down at books or a computer screen can also cause unwanted neck creases and saggy jowls, warns leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Prager.

‘If you spend most of the time looking down, then neck muscles shorten and go saggy, eventually causing a second neck,’ he says. ‘We are seeing a lot of people with executive jobs in offices who have this problem.’

Keeping your screen at eye level and using a book-stand to prevent bowing your head for hours on end while reading reports can help prevent neck wrinkles from developing.

Less than four per cent of employees drink seven glasses of fluid a day, according to a recent survey of 1,000 UK office workers. As a result, many suffer headaches, a lack of concentration and dizziness. With air conditioning and central heating added to the mix, skin can become dry and parched, adding to the appearance of wrinkles.
Even your eyes can become dehydrated. ‘Make sure you blink fully and regularly as your eyes will dry out staring at a screen,’ says Karen Sparrow, education advisor at the Association of Optometrists.

Figures from charity BackCare show that 50 per cent of office workers who use a computer say they have lower back pain, while another survey found that 36 per cent of deskbound workers complain of poor posture.

The biggest cause of such problems is not sitting properly at your desk and not having the appropriate chair.

‘On a well-positioned chair, your thighs should be at right angles to your body or sloping slightly down when you are seated, and there should be a small gap between the front of the seat and the back of your knees,’ says Sash Newman, chief executive of the charity BackCare

Sammy Margo, a spokesperson for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, says that slouching at the desk puts strain on some muscles and weakens others.
The result? Round shoulders and a pot belly.

‘You don’t use your abdominal muscles when you slouch, so you will eventually lose strength and tone in that area,’ Margo says.

‘Having rounded shoulders and bad posture will also cause your stomach to stick out. Standing up straight can have an instant stomach-flattening effect.’

Wondered why your bottom is getting broader by the week? Time spent at your desk is certainly not helping to tone your posterior.

‘With your knees at a 90-degree angle when you sit, your hamstring muscles and hip flexors are permanently shortened and your buttock muscles stretched but not engaged, so that they are not working or being strengthened,’ Margo says. Just standing up and sitting down a few times an hour will give your buttocks a mini workout and help to avoid the dreaded spread. But walking up the stairs at work is the best bottom-toner of all. One in two people in the UK suffers from the embarrassing problem of piles (haemorrhoids) at some time in their life, and sitting down on a chair too long can make them worse. Piles — swollen blood vessels in the back passage — are caused by increased pressure in the blood vessels in your bottom, and being seated for hours on end increases the pressure being placed on the buttocks.Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1379050/Office-workers-prone-bowel-cancer.html#ixzz1lG5NJyTF

Cosmetic surgeon Dr Michael Prager says that frowning or squinting in front of a computer screen means that ‘over time, you will end up with frown lines’ around your eyes, and furrowing in your forehead.

And according to the Health and Safety Executive, staring at a computer screen for hours on end can also cause ‘tired eyes, discomfort and temporary short-sightedness’.

One study in the Journal Of Epidemiology showed that looking at a screen for more than nine hours a day raised the risk of the progressive eye disease glaucoma.

There is no legal requirement for the number of breaks away from the screen you should take, but the Association of Optometrists recommends focusing on something else about 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

10 Reasons to Have a Regular Eye Exam

Vision is a precious gift. With healthy eyes we can see our surroundings, enjoy the people around us, and even glimpse our own features in the mirror. Although people with dimmed or no vision manage very well, being able to see clearly is a wonderful asset in life.

The eye examination is a vital health check and should be part of everyone’s normal health regime. Here are 10 important reasons to have a regular examination:

1. You only have one pair of eyes. Once lost, your eyesight may never be replaced.

2. Unlike most of your body, your eyes do not usually hurt when there is something wrong.

3. The eye examination can pick up early signs of potentially blinding eye conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease or macular degeneration.

4. The earlier a problem is detected the greater the chance of successful treatment.

5. The eye examination can also detect a number of other underlying health problems, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes.

6. An eye exam checks whether your eyesight needs correcting with glasses and determines the best form of correction for your vision.

7. Good vision means working and playing better and safer – in fact it means a better quality of life.

8. For young people, good eyesight is vital for learning. An eye examination will detect any problems in sight which may be affecting school performance.

9. Failing eyesight is often taken for granted as people get older. However, by having an eye examination and remedying problems in sight, older people can improve their quality of life significantly.

10. Poor eyesight is dangerous. Make sure that you are legal to drive and safe to operate your vehicle.

Unless otherwise advised you should have an eye examination every year. It may be necessary to have examinations more frequently depending on your age and/or medical history.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome or CVS is one of the adverse effects of the invention of computers. Doctors say that generally anyone who spends more than two hours a day in front of the computer screen is most likely to experience this problem. Computer vision syndrome is a term which is used to describe all the symptoms of vision related problems. This not only affects the eyes but also affects the sufferer mentally and physically. This in turn also affects one’s productivity at work.

To check out whether you are suffering from CVS you should know about its symptoms.

Diplopia or double vision: it is basically an illusion when one finds two images when only one image is present in reality. It is irrespective of the image that one sees that is it can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. This can be due to head injuries, intoxication of alcohol or even long exposure of eyes to your computer screen.

Dry eye syndrome: this is nothing but when eyes turn too dry or the tear production is reduced or the increase in tear film evaporation. This is most observed when we stare at the computer screen for long hours without blinking our eye lids.

Myopia: It is the most commonly seen in the teenagers. It is also called as short sightedness or near sightedness. This includes blurring of the distant images and which can be corrected by wearing appropriate glasses prescribed the doctor or even corrected by contact lenses.

Photophobia: This is something that is detected when you have a reduced tolerance to light. Eventually eyes become very sensitive to light and experience pain and discomfort.

Asthenopia: it is an eye strain which includes symptoms like fatigue, red eyes, headache, eye strain, pain in and around the eyes.

What causes CVS?

Computer Screen: constantly gazing at the screen can lead to CVS.
Image clarity: if you miss the image clarity then you tend to gaze at the monitor more.
Glare: glare forces us to focus more on the screen which can again be the cause of eye strain and CVS.
Infrequent blinking can also lead to CVS.

How to avoid CVS?

Definitely when one finds the symptoms of CVS he or she should go to the doctor for proper check up and diagnosis. But there are precautions that one should take to avoid these problems from cropping up.

Screen distance: Try to maintain a minimum distance of 16-20 inches between the screen and the eye. Also adjust the screen level 15-20 degrees below the eye level.

Avoid sitting in front of a fan or something like that while working with a computer. This can dry your eyes.

Try to reduce glare hitting the screen.

Blink often and use eye lubrication eye drops to protect your eyes from acute dryness.

Make a habit of taking a break of 5 min every half an hour to avoid continuous gazing at the screen. This reduces fatigue and refreshes the eyes.

The best part is that it is curable and avoidable if precautions are carefully taken.

Here are Top 10 simple tips you can use to prevent all computer-related Repetitive Strain Injuries:

Tip 1: Position

If you are an avid computer user then you may be the most at risk for RSI and do not even know it. The main causes of RSI come from bad posture and typing without taking breaks. You may start to develop pain in the back and neck areas as well as in the arms and hands. In order to keep yourself from developing RSI, you need to be willing to change some things in your life, such as sitting differently, taking breaks, and stretching out.

Many people tend to lean forward or to the side while they are typing or watching a video online. Over a period of time, your muscles will contract to help support the way your body is leaning towards. In order to prevent a stiff back/neck or other RSI symptoms, you should make yourself sit up straight. While working on correcting your posture, you should also make sure that there is a flow of fresh air in the room and that you are not too hot or too cold. Also, there should not be a glare on your monitor’s screen while you are working. To fix this, use a low level light and drapes to cover any bright light shining through nearby windows. The room you have chosen to be in should also be a quiet place that you can get away from your stresses in.

Tip 8: Habits

Your work habits: Switching up your work habits is among the best ways to prevent RSI. Drink plenty of water, water flushes toxins out of vital organs of your body, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

Tip 9: Light in the Room & your Monitor:

Reduce lighting in room by using fewer light bulbs or white light tubes. If possible, you should position monitor so that windows are in the sides instead of front or back.

Your Monitor should be free of glare from light coming through the windows or lamps.

Pull the shades or close the blinds to reduce glare/lighting on your monitor

Your Monitor should be free of glare from ceiling/room lights.

If you use a lamp near desk, and if it causes glare on your screen, adjust the angle of your task lamp so there is not glare on your screen.

Avoid using monitor screens having glossy finish.

Use monitor which have matte finish screen.

A major cause of computer eye strain can be old style CRT screens, which can cause “flicker” of images on the screen giving you headaches after few hours. If possible replace your CRT monitor with LCD monitor with at least 22 inches screen.

Repetitive Strain Injury is a serious condition that can lead to serious bodily deterioration if left unchecked. It is best to follow these tips to prevent RSI.

What Is RSI?

RSI, better known as Repetitive Strain Injury, is an injury that affects the musculoskeletal and nervous symptoms. People who suffer with RSI normally complain about pain in the arm and shoulder area as well as in the wrists or hands. They also say that it hurts worse when they are actively moving or typing. If you are an avid computer user who thinks that they may have a type of RSI, then you may be suffering with non-specific arm pain or WRULD, which is also known as work related upper limb disorder. Some people who are having trouble with their wrists or hands believe that they may have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but the symptoms of RSI are never joined in one set area and have no characteristics pertaining to any discrete pathological conditions.

These days computers are now an essential part of everyday life. Computers are used for mundane tasks such as making a list of groceries to more serious work oriented tasks. The primary input device used in computers is the keyboard; this is where you will spend most of your time working. Continued Keyboard usage can become detrimental to your health and lead to repetitive Strain Injury, otherwise known as RSI for short. Repetitive Strain Injury is an umbrella term for a number of work-related injuries that affect the eyes, hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders and neck. RSI can also affect tendons and nerves. Prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury is relatively easy and should be employed as much as possible to subvert the dangerous effects it will have on an individual’s health.

Effects of Ergonomic Management
Software on Employee Performance
Report by
Professor Alan Hedge, PhD, AFBPsS, MErgS
Department of Design and Environmental Analysis
Cornell University
Ithaca, NY 14853-4401
September, 1999
Cornell

This study tested the effects of using ergonomic work pacing software
(Ergonomic Management System) on typing (accuracy and amount of keying),
and mouse work (frequency and duration of mouse use). The performance of
twenty-one executive, administrative, customer service, underwriter and
accounting personnel was passively monitored for five weeks, to establish a
baseline. Then the software was fully activated for 10 people (test group), and all
personnel were monitored for an additional five-week period. There was a
statistically significant 13% improvement in work accuracy for the test group,
representing a 1% increase in their total productivity during in the five-week
period. There was a 20% increase in mouse use for the test group, but because of
inter-subject variability, this just failed statistical significance. There was no
difference in total keystrokes between test and control groups. Results show that
alerting users to take more short rest and break periods did not impair their overall
keystroke and mouse use, but did improve their work accuracy. Economic
analysis shows that the performance benefits alone that may accrue from using
ergonomic work pacing software indicate a return on investment of around 3
months.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Continuous work cannot be maintained indefinitely by people. Physiological
processes limit the ability of muscles to sustain contraction and function under conditions
of physical fatigue. For example, the capability of muscles to perform static work
typically is less than 1 minute, and to perform heavy, dynamic work the duration
typically is less than 30 minutes. In addition to these physiological limitations, cognitive
factors, such as boredom and mental fatigue, affect performance and especially human
error.
