What Is RSI?

RSI, better known as Repetitive Strain Injury, is an injury that affects the musculoskeletal and nervous symptoms. People who suffer with RSI normally complain about pain in the arm and shoulder area as well as in the wrists or hands. They also say that it hurts worse when they are actively moving or typing. If you are an avid computer user who thinks that they may have a type of RSI, then you may be suffering with non-specific arm pain or WRULD, which is also known as work related upper limb disorder.

Some people who are having trouble with their wrists or hands believe that they may have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but the symptoms of RSI are never joined in one set area and have no characteristics pertaining to any discrete pathological conditions.

Ergonomics

If you are an avid computer user then you may be the most at risk for RSI and do not even know it. The main causes of RSI come from bad posture and typing without taking breaks. You may start to develop pain in the back and neck areas as well as in the arms and hands. In order to keep yourself from developing RSI, you need to be willing to change some things in your life, such as sitting differently, taking breaks, and stretching out.

Many people tend to lean forward or to the side while they are typing or watching a video online. Over a period of time, your muscles will contract to help support the way your body is leaning towards. In order to prevent a stiff back/neck or other RSI symptoms, you should make yourself sit up straight.

While working on correcting your posture, you should also make sure that there is a flow of fresh air in the room and that you are not too hot or too cold. Also, there should not be a glare on your monitor’s screen while you are working. To fix this, use a low level light and drapes to cover any bright light shining through nearby windows. The room you have chosen to be in should also be a quiet place that you can get away from your stresses in.

Mouse Techniques

Sometimes you cannot help but use a mouse while on the computer, but the traditional mouse will only contribute to your risks of RSI. You should try switching your mouse out for a more ergonomic mouse. These can include a roller mouse, a joystick, or a vertical pen.

If you insist on using the traditional mouse, you should try to keep from resting your wrists and arms while you are moving the mouse around. After you click on an object, roll the mouse around a bit to give your hand a small workout. Do not move the mouse with your wrist or elbow only and also keep yourself from gripping onto the mouse.

Stretches

When you decide to take a break from being on the computer, you should pick out some stretches and use them to relax. There are various stretches out there that were designed to help each part of your body.

The quickest and easiest stretches involve touching your toes, wiggling your fingers, rotating your shoulders and neck around in circles, leaning backwards, covering your eyes for a few seconds, bending your feet up and down, and bending your arms and knees repeatedly.

Surgery

If you have RSI and a doctor has diagnosed you, then he may prescribe some medication for you to take. If you have previously taken some medication, but it failed, then you may have to have surgery done on your hand or arm. Many RSI’s do not have surgery as a solution, but if you are suffering with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Arthritis, then you have that as an option.

The success rate of surgery is at 70%, but half of that percentage came back within 2 years, complaining of pain all over again. Many of these surgeries can cost up to $8000 or more, so most people rely on medication as a cheaper and safer alternative to surgery.

Taking Breaks

You should always take breaks while on the computer to prevent any straining of the eyes and the development of pain in the muscles. In order to fix eye strain, you should look away from the computer screen for at least a minute every half an hour. Make sure to blink often as well so that your eyes do not dry out and begin to hurt.

When it comes to hands, wrists, and fingers, you do not want them cramping up on you while you are typing. This is why you should raise your arms up over your head and stretch out or get up and walk around every once and awhile.
You do not want to spend all day on the computer, so take a break from the internet every couple of hours. This way you can stretch out your legs, eat a snack, or do something else that needs to be done. A good method is to pour yourself a glass of water and complete some small exercises during this time.

Typing Techniques

If your wrists are not up in the air while you are typing, then you are contributing to your risk of getting RSI. Make sure that your wrists are straight and that your eyes are facing forward.

If you already suffer from RSI, then you may want to switch your keyboard to one that is designed by OrbiTouch, Maltron, Datahand, or Kinesis. Many people have also decided to switch their keyboard layout completely and went with the DVORAK keyboard layout. This keyboard was designed to minimize the movement of your hands. This is achievable by getting you to alternate between hands while typing. While using this keyboard you will end up usinyour right hand more than your left.

Voice Recognition

If you are worried about getting RSI or are already suffering with it, then you may want to download a piece of voice recognition software, so you do not have to use the keyboard at all. This software is especially handy whenever you need to write a long email to a friend or complete a set of documentation for work.

Do not buy any voice recognition software before trying it out first. This way you will know if it will work for you or not and best of all, it is free. Also, you may want to try to get someone to buy the software for you, so that you will not have to spend all of your money on something that may become outdated the following year.
Drink some water before and during a voice recognition session in order to keep your mouth from drying out. If you start to have problems while working on a session, then you should take a break in order to rest your throat and vocal cords. Be sure to talk like you normally do, so that the voice recognition software will work the best that it can.

Light in the Room & your Monitor:

Reduce lighting in room by using fewer light bulbs or white light tubes. If possible, you should position monitor so that windows are in the sides instead of front or back.

  • Your Monitor should be free of glare from light coming through the windows or lamps.
  • Pull the shades or close the blinds to reduce glare/lighting on your monitor
  • Your Monitor should be free of glare from ceiling/room lights.
  • If you use a lamp near desk, and if it causes glare on your screen, adjust the angle of your task lamp so there is not glare on your screen.
  • Avoid using monitor screens having glossy finish.
  • Use monitor which have matte finish screen.
  • A major cause of computer eye strain can be old style CRT screens, which  can cause “flicker” of images on the screen giving you headaches after few hours. If possible replace your CRT monitor with LCD monitor with at least 22 inches screen.

The primary input device used in computers is the keyboard; this is where you will spend most of your time working. Continued Keyboard usage can become detrimental to your health and lead to repetitive Strain Injury, otherwise known as RSI for short.

Repetitive Strain Injury is an umbrella term for a number of work-related injuries that affect the eyes, hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders and neck. RSI can also affect tendons and nerves.
